Man in His 50s Arrested for Knife Attack on Police in Gateshead

A man in his 50s has been snapped up by cops after allegedly assaulting a police officer with a blade at a petrol station in Gateshead. The drama kicked off when Northumbria Police stopped a suspicious vehicle in the Leam Lane area on Thursday afternoon.

Bladed Attack Sends Officer to Hospital

Police reports reveal the tense moment unfolded at around 3:50 PM. Officers spotted a vehicle of interest and pulled it over. The driver then allegedly attacked a male officer with a bladed weapon, slashing his arm. The suspect bolted on foot straight after the assault.

Quick Police Response Nails Suspect

The suspect didn’t get far. Police caught him soon after in the Rodsley Avenue area of Gateshead. The injured officer was treated at the scene and thankfully, his wounds are not life-threatening.

“Shortly after 3:50 PM today (Thursday), officers were alerted to a vehicle of interest in the Leam Lane area of Gateshead. After stopping the car, the driver assaulted a male police officer with a bladed article, causing an injury to his arm. The driver fled the scene on foot but was swiftly arrested in the Rodsley Avenue area of Gateshead,” said a Northumbria Police spokesperson.
