Fire crews have issued a safety warning after an unattended barbecue caused a garden fire in Chelmsford.
Emergency services were called to Epping Close at 6.32pm yesterday (Saturday 26 April), with two fire engines from Chelmsford Fire Station attending the scene.
A fire had broken out in the garden of a two-storey house after a barbecue was left unattended and tipped over, setting fire to old bedding nearby. Fortunately, the occupants were alerted by a smoke alarm, enabling a swift response.
Watch Manager Mark Curtis said:
“The barbecue was unattended and fell over, setting fire to some old bedding. It scorched the back windows and burnt the waste pipes, but thankfully the occupants were alerted and crews were on the scene quickly to extinguish it.”
Firefighters had the blaze under control and fully extinguished by 6.47pm, preventing further damage to the property.
As the warmer weather arrives, Essex County Fire and Rescue Service is reminding the public about barbecue safety:
- Never leave a barbecue unattended.
- Always set barbecues well away from fences, sheds, trees, and garden furniture.
- Ensure the barbecue is completely extinguished before leaving it.
- Keep a bucket of water or sand nearby in case of emergencies.
- Check that gas barbecues are in good working order before use.
Fire crews praised the importance of working smoke alarms, which can provide crucial early warnings and save lives.
