Man Caught Smuggling Nearly £500k in Air Freshener Truck

A Polish man has been jailed for 20 months after attempting to smuggle almost half a million pounds out of the UK hidden inside a truckload of air fresheners.

Krzysztof Turadek Busted at Dover

Krzysztof Hubert Turadek, 34, was slapped with the prison sentence at Canterbury Crown Court on 3 November following a National Crime Agency probe.

The drama unfolded on 19 September 2020 when Border Force officers stopped Turadek’s HGV tractor and trailer at the outbound freight controls in Dover, Kent.

Hidden Cash Discovered in Secret Compartment

The vehicle carried a legitimate shipment of 33 pallets of aerosol air fresheners picked up in Derby. But a thorough Border Force search revealed 49 secret packages stuffed inside a hidden hatch in the trailer floor, known as a coil well.

Inside those packages was a whopping £488,345 in cash, all destined for Poland.

Quick Plea and Conviction

Turadek pleaded guilty on 27 October at Canterbury Crown Court 1. Now he faces nearly two years behind bars for money laundering and smuggling.
