Exposing Britain’s Biggest Legal Scandal: Alan Bates Speaks Out

Alan Bates, the relentless campaigner behind the UK’s biggest miscarriage of justice, gets the full spotlight in ‘People vs Post Office: The Real Story’. For nearly two decades, Alan has fought to expose a scandal described as the most widespread injustice in British legal history. His deal was brokered by Luke Speed of Curtis Brown Group.

Lives Torn Apart by Post Office Scandal

The film also features sub postmasters whose lives were shattered after being falsely accused in the scandal, many of whom are portrayed in the recent ITV drama. Over 14 years, the Post Office accused hundreds of thefts, leading to prison sentences and over 700 wrongful criminal convictions. Thousands lost their livelihoods and reputations.

  • Financial ruin
  • Severe mental and physical health issues
  • At least one tragic suicide linked to the stress

After spotting accounting shortfalls and being fired in 2003, Alan refused to accept blame. He suspected the Fujitsu-supplied Horizon computer system was faulty. Rallying hundreds of other victims, Alan launched a landmark legal battle against the government-run Post Office.

Against all odds, Alan won in court. His fight for justice and compensation, however, is far from over.

Behind the Scenes of the Documentary

Executive Producers Natasha Bondy and Ben Gale helmed the film. Natasha said:

“This story has shocked the nation. Alan Bates has fought tirelessly for justice but shunned the limelight. We’re honoured to tell his story.”

ITV’s Controller of Factual, Jo Clinton-Davis, commissioned the documentary along with Head of Factual Entertainment Sue Murphy. Jo added:

“This film gives a voice to those who sacrificed everything to expose the scandal at one of the UK’s most familiar institutions. It’s a powerful companion to the ITV drama.”
