A man is in serious condition in the hospital after being attacked by a “large bulldog-type dog,” which was subsequently shot dead by police in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire.
The incident unfolded at approximately 5 pm, prompting a response from firearms officers as the dog was reported to be dangerously out of control.
Before the attack, another man had been injured by the same dog in a neighbouring street. This initial victim sustained minor injuries and was transported to Hairmyres Hospital for treatment.
The second victim, who suffered “serious” injuries in the Tinto View area attack, was quickly attended to by paramedics and transported to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow for further medical attention.
Police officers were compelled to use lethal force against the “large bulldog-type dog” when it attempted to attack an officer on the scene. Efforts will now be made to determine the exact breed of the dog.
Due to the firearms discharge, the circumstances surrounding the incident will be referred to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC) for investigation.
Superintendent Steven Espie provided reassurance to the local community, stating, “This was a distressing incident for those involved. I would like to reassure the local community that this was a contained incident and there is no further risk to the public. There will be a continued police presence in the area while our inquiries continue. Inquiries are also ongoing to establish the breed of the dog.”
