At least eight people have been arrested after bottles were thrown at police officers in Croydon this evening. The arrests took place as around 50 people gathered in North End Road, where riots were anticipated.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed on X (formerly known as Twitter) that the individuals were arrested for assaulting emergency workers, possession of offensive weapons, and other offences. They also indicated that more arrests are expected to follow.
Earlier in the day, more than 1,300 public order police officers were deployed across London in response to speculation of potential riots. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Andy Valentine had warned: “We will not tolerate any disorder and will make arrests.”
The police were supported by a range of specialist teams, including mounted units, dog handlers, intelligence experts, and evidence gatherers. Retrospective facial recognition technology was also being employed to help identify individuals involved in criminal activities, even if they were wearing masks.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Valentine emphasized the police’s commitment to maintaining order, stating: “No-one wants to be caught up in potentially violent and criminal behaviour.”
