Improperly Disposed BBQ Tray Sparks Fire in Gravesend

Kent Fire and Rescue Service were called to a large garden fire on Sandown Road in Gravesend just before midnight on Saturday, 31 May, after flames from a discarded wood-chipping cooking tray ignited a bin and spread to a home’s exterior.

The fire, which broke out at 11:59 PM, prompted a swift emergency response. Two fire engines attended the scene and crews in breathing apparatus used high-pressure hose reel jets to bring the blaze under control by 12:31 AM on Sunday.

No Injuries, But Residents Displaced

There were no reported injuries, but residents were forced to find alternative accommodation due to the impact on the property. Firefighters remained on scene to dampen down hotspots and ensure the fire did not reignite.

Cause Linked to Outdoor Cooking Waste

Investigators believe the fire was accidental, caused by an improperly disposed wood chipping tray, likely used during a barbecue or pizza oven session.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service issued a reminder to the public about safe outdoor cooking practices, especially as summer weather encourages more garden gatherings.

Fire Safety Tips from KFRS:

  • Always allow cooking materials to fully cool down before disposing of them.

  • Keep barbecues and pizza ovens well away from buildings, fences, and vegetation.

  • Never leave cooking unattended.

  • Keep children and pets clear of the cooking zone.

Community Response

Local residents praised the rapid response of firefighters and expressed relief that the fire was contained quickly before spreading further.
