Virgin Media Portsmouth Staff taken Hostage
Hampshire Constabulary confirmed today, on Saturday 31st October 2015, that they received a call shortly after 12:00pm noon reporting that a man was making threats with a knife in the Virgin Media store on Commercial Road in the City Centre. The surrounding area was evacuated and sealed off to the public, whilst specialist police negotiators arrived on the scene to speak with the man named locally as Toby Maylott, who entered the Virgin Media store in Commercial Road at lunchtime, armed with a machete, before taking one hostage and releasing three others, including a wheelchair user. Officers with guns and riot shields were spotted on the scene, assisted by police dogs, both in the shop and on the roof. Initial rumours that injured people were seen leaving the shop and that there were multiple people inside the building were refuted as incorrect by the police. “There are no reports of injuries, and no information to suggest a wider threat to the public in the city,” Hampshire Constabulary announced. The man has now been detained following a public order situation in the Hampshire Constabulary thanked the public for their patience. https://www.
