Severe Cold Weather Alert in Place Until Tuesday
A yellow cold health warning has been issued across Kent, with temperatures forecast to drop below freezing in the coming days.
The alert, issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), will be in force from 9am today (February 7) until 9am on Tuesday (February 11).
Increased Health Risks for Vulnerable Groups
Authorities have warned that the extreme cold weather could lead to a greater demand for healthcare services, particularly among vulnerable individuals, including the elderly, young children, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
Yellow cold health alerts have also been issued for other regions, including the North East, North West, and Yorkshire and the Humber.
Weather Forecast and Temperature Drop
According to the Met Office, a high-pressure system across the country will bring strong easterly winds, low temperatures, and an increased risk of snow and ice over the weekend.
Met Office Spokesperson Stephen Dixon said:
“What we are seeing with the UK’s weather over the next few days is the influence of high pressure and the development of a south-easterly airflow, which will see temperatures drop for many.”
“We could see temperatures drop as low as minus 7°C in rural parts of Scotland from Friday into the weekend. Further south, we’re still likely to see sub-zero temperatures.”
“Rural parts of southern Wales could reach minus 4°C from Friday overnight into the weekend.”
Despite the cold snap, daytime temperatures in the UK will only be slightly below the average February maximum of 7°C.
Chance of Snow and Ice in Southern England
There is a slight chance of snowfall in parts of the South of England and South Wales from Friday onwards, but the Met Office has stated that this is not expected to be significantly disruptive.
Kent Weather Forecast
The county is expected to experience rain over the weekend, with drier conditions returning next week.
Residents are urged to take extra precautions, particularly by:
- Keeping homes heated to at least 18°C
- Wearing warm clothing
- Checking on vulnerable neighbours and family members
The UKHSA and Met Office will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed.
