A body has been recovered from the River Thames during the search for Kaliyah Coa, the 11-year-old girl who went missing in East London at the end of March.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that officers were called to Maritime Quay shortly before 9am on Sunday morning (13 April) following reports of a body in the water.
In a statement, the Met said:
“The body is yet to be formally identified. However, the family of Kaliyah Coa have been informed of this development and are being supported by specialist officers.”
Tragic End to Search
Kaliyah was reported missing after she fell into the River Thames while playing near Barge House Causeway in North Woolwich on March 29, a school inset day. Despite extensive search efforts by emergency services and the community, there had been no confirmed sightings of her until today.
Emergency crews, including specialist dive teams and river police, were involved in the weeks-long search operation.
Investigation Ongoing
While formal identification is yet to take place, police say an investigation continues into the circumstances surrounding Kaliyah’s disappearance. A post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out in the coming days.
Tributes and messages of support for Kaliyah’s family have begun appearing online, with many locals expressing heartbreak at the tragic news. Community vigils are being planned across parts of East London.
