A man described by police as “high-risk” and potentially dangerous has been tracked down following a major search across West London. Vasile Coceban, 36, had escaped from the Park Royal Centre for Mental Health in Acton Lane, Brent, at around 10.30am on Wednesday, April 16.
The Metropolitan Police launched an urgent appeal after Coceban fled the secure facility, warning the public not to approach him and instead call 999 if he was seen. Officers advised residents to check their gardens and outbuildings, fearing he may be hiding nearby.
At the time of his escape, Coceban was wearing a purple camouflage hoodie, grey tracksuit bottoms, and light-coloured trainers. CCTV later captured him on Kilburn High Road at approximately 4.20pm the same day, wearing a grey tracksuit top over a red T-shirt and carrying a newly purchased large black rucksack. Police believe he had also changed clothes after fleeing the centre.
It is understood Coceban may have travelled between Brent and Hyde Park using the London Underground, with detectives considering the possibility that he was sleeping rough or camping in the Kilburn area.
Detective Superintendent Andrew Brien, from the Met’s North West Command Unit, said:
“A high-risk missing person investigation was quickly launched when we learned of the risk posed by Vasile. It is important we return him to the facility where he is being treated. Extensive patrols were conducted in the area where he was believed to be, and we are grateful to the public for remaining alert and assisting with our enquiries.”
Police have since confirmed that Coceban has now been located and returned to the Park Royal Centre. The full circumstances surrounding his escape and movements while on the run are under investigation.
Authorities have not revealed exactly where or when he was apprehended but thanked the public for their vigilance.
