A major search operation is underway after a prisoner, Jonathon Windsor, 31, escaped from Salford Royal Hospital while under armed escort, Greater Manchester Police have confirmed.
Windsor, a prisoner at HMP Forest Bank, reportedly “escaped lawful custody” while being treated at the hospital on Stott Lane. Residents have been warned not to approach him and to report any sightings immediately. Windsor, who is described as wearing a grey top and still in handcuffs, has known links across northwest and south Manchester.
The incident occurred earlier today, prompting a significant response from emergency services. Police vehicles have been seen in the area, with officers conducting door-to-door inquiries, asking residents for any doorbell or CCTV footage that may help locate the fugitive. A police helicopter has also been deployed, circling areas near the hospital and as far as Sale, while officers combed the vicinity, including fields near the De La Salle playing grounds and Sale Water Park.
One local resident said, “There have been police everywhere, and I was told a prisoner has escaped and is on the run.” Another resident mentioned that officers had been checking roads and fields near Wilton Road, where the prisoner was last seen.
Greater Manchester Police have yet to confirm further details about Windsor or the specific nature of his offences. Meanwhile, HMP Forest Bank, a Category B men’s prison operated by Sodexo Justice Services, issued a statement confirming the incident but declined to comment further, stating they are working closely with police on the matter.
Anyone with information or potential sightings of Windsor is urged to contact Greater Manchester Police immediately.
