In a heartrending incident off the coast of Audreselles, two migrants have tragically lost their lives after their dinghy capsized, mere hours after French police failed to intervene during their attempt to cross the Channel. The emergency, which saw the deployment of at least five rescue ships and a Coastguard helicopter, has cast a grim light on the ongoing migrant crisis.
The incident has sparked outrage, as it was revealed that French police observed but did not stop the group of about 60 people as they embarked on their perilous journey. The dinghy reportedly began to struggle less than a kilometer from the beach, leading to catastrophic consequences.
A French investigation source disclosed, “Police were watching the boats leave from around Neufchatel-Hardelot but hesitated to act once they were in the water. Not long after, one of the boats overturned, throwing everyone into the sea.”
The deceased, a man and a woman in their 30s, were declared dead following a harrowing rescue operation. Another victim was airlifted to the hospital, while 57 other passengers were narrowly rescued. Rescue teams initially found the majority of the migrants in the water, with two individuals tragically found lifeless.
The Prefecture Maritime detailed the rescue operation, stating, “After being winched out by helicopter, one individual was handed over to the fire department. The helicopter then located two missing persons who were, sadly, unresponsive. Attempts to resuscitate them were unsuccessful.”
This latest tragedy follows a series of fatal incidents in the Channel, including the drowning of six Afghans in August and the 2021 disaster where at least 27 migrants perished.
In response to the increasing number of crossings, the UK pledged to fund an additional 500 French officers for beach patrols, as part of a £500 million three-year deal aimed at curbing migrant crossings. Despite these measures and the presence of British observers in French control rooms, over 26,000 people have reached Britain via small boats since the start of 2023.
The conditions in the Channel have been particularly challenging due to high winds and strong swells, making crossings almost impossible. However, it appears that people smugglers have attempted to exploit brief lulls in the weather, leading to dangerous and sometimes fatal journeys.
The CROSS Gris-Nez, coordinating with the maritime gendarmerie, reported the migrants’ boat setting sail and its subsequent difficulties. They issued an alert to all nearby ships and vessels to assist in the rescue operation.
This tragic event underscores the desperate circumstances faced by migrants and the urgent need for effective and humane solutions to prevent further loss of life in these dangerous crossings.
