Mental Health Patient Who Admitted Manslaughter Goes Missing After Threatening Staff
A woman detained under the Mental Health Act has vanished after allegedly threatening hospital staff with a weapon. Laura Van Marle’s disappearance has sparked a major manhunt across Wellington, Somerset, involving helicopters and specialist police units.
Escape Details and Description
Van Marle, 43, went on the run at around 5:10pm last Friday during an escorted hospital leave. Police confirmed the staff member she threatened was not harmed. The court imposed an indefinite hospital order on her in 2021 following a manslaughter admission.
She’s described as slim, roughly 5ft 7in, with blonde hair. When last seen, she wore a white vest top, grey denim shorts, and black trainers — but may have changed clothes since then.
Intensive Search Underway
Avon and Somerset Police have launched a fast-paced search operation. A police helicopter, dog units, and specialist teams are combing the area. Authorities warn Van Marle might have left Wellington, possibly travelling by public transport, and has ties to Herefordshire.
Public Urged to Stay Cautious
Police stress the public should not approach Van Marle or dial 999 if seen. Instead, any information should be reported to the non-emergency number 101. With serious concerns over her mental health and potential risks, authorities urge anyone with info to help bring her in safely.
