Medmerry Beach Evacuated Over Suspected Bomb
Medmerry Beach in West Sussex was closed down yesterday after a suspected bomb was spotted on the sand. Volunteers from the Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team rushed to the scene at 12.34pm on 11 March following reports of a possible explosive device.
The team quickly found the suspicious object and snapped photos before sending them to Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts for urgent assessment. A safety cordon was set up, blocking off the beach from the public.
However, by 3pm, the rising tide had swallowed the device, forcing crews to call off operations until the next day.
Bomb Disposal Units Return for Dangerous Work
The following morning at 9.30am on 12 March, coastguards re-established the cordon and locked down the beach once more. EOD teams arrived, warning the device was large and required a massive one-kilometre safety zone.
Sussex Police and the Littlehampton Coastguard Rescue Team were called in for extra support as the tense operation got underway.
Controlled Explosions Rock West Sussex
At 3.30pm, the bomb disposal experts detonated two controlled explosions, safely destroying the device. The blasts reportedly rattled windows and were heard as far away as Middleton-on-Sea.
Coastguard teams stood down an hour later, declaring the beach clear — at least for now.
Stay Alert: Don’t Touch Suspicious Items
Rescue teams warn the public to stay vigilant around any suspicious objects on beaches. “Ordnance comes in many forms and can remain deadly even after decades,” they cautioned.
“Do not touch or move any suspected devices. If you find anything suspicious, call the Coastguard immediately.”
Medmerry Beach remains closed due to ongoing dangers, including unexploded bombs. Anyone spotting suspicious items should dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard without delay.
