Canterbury’s cops have hit back hard against a recent spike in retail crime, charging more than 20 suspected shoplifters in just one week.

Shoplifting Wave Sends Shock Through Canterbury Shops

From Friday 6 March to Monday 9 March 2026, police launched a crackdown on a string of shoplifting sprees across the city. Suspects targeted everything from supermarkets to high street chains, leaving retailers reeling.

Pet Food, Booze and Fragrances Among Stolen Goods

  • Collette Oliver, 41, from New Town Street, was charged with four thefts in one day on 20 February. Her haul included pet food, cleaning supplies, groceries and ice cream stolen from Pets at Home, B&M, Subway and Sainsbury’s on Sturry Road.
  • Oliver also faces charges over two New Year incidents at a Kingsmead Road supermarket where she allegedly damaged stock, stole alcohol and assaulted staff. She’s been bailed to appear at Folkestone Magistrates’ Court on 15 April.
  • Anniemay Rossiter, 31, and Mark Lees, 41, have been charged with stealing from Sainsbury’s on Old Dover Road and Waitrose at St George’s Place. They’re due at Margate Magistrates’ Court on 13 May.
  • David Bates, 39, nabbed over £450 worth of cleaning products from B&M. Held since 7 March, he faces five charges and will also appear in court on 13 May.
  • Ali Mirzai, 30, stole clothes worth over £300 from Primark and Marks & Spencer. He pleaded guilty and received an eight-week suspended sentence at Margate Magistrates.
  • John Jay Stark, 45, was caught stealing beer from Sainsbury’s, allegedly hiding it in the toilets. Meanwhile, Toni Ferry, 37, faces charges including a November 2025 Boots theft of fragrances valued at over £300. Both were bailed to Folkestone Magistrates’ Court on 14 May.
