Adam Stepney, 28, from Worthing, has been locked up for three years after a shocking multi-vehicle smash in Climping that left a 60-year-old woman with life-changing injuries.
The crash unfolded on the A259 Grevatts Lane around 5.30pm on Tuesday, 14 May 2024. Stepney’s car crossed the central white lines and ploughed into several vehicles before a terrifying head-on collision with the victim’s car.
Dangerous Driving and Hidden Health Risks
- Stepney pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving at Portsmouth Crown Court.
- He was banned from driving for four years.
- Investigation revealed Stepney, who suffers from epilepsy, failed to report recent seizures to the DVLA.
- Stepney had a seizure behind the wheel, losing control and sparking the crash.
Judge Slams ‘Appalling’ Cover-Up
The judge called the incident “appalling,” condemning Stepney for hiding his medical condition and recklessly continuing to drive, putting others in grave danger.
“This was a wholly avoidable incident. Stepney made a conscious decision to drive despite knowing he was not medically fit to do so,” said lead investigator Tudor Wells. “The consequences have been life-changing for an innocent member of the public.”
The victim still receives ongoing treatment nearly two years later, a tragic reminder of the dangers of ignoring medical conditions behind the wheel.
Warning to Drivers: Don’t Risk Lives, Report Your Health Issues
Authorities urge anyone with medical conditions affecting their driving to report to the DVLA immediately. Ignoring this vital step puts lives in jeopardy and carries severe consequences.
