A terrifying family dog attack in Woodchurch left two adults hospitalised and required immediate police intervention to protect three young children late on Saturday night (February 15, 2025).

Incident Details

The attack took place just before midnight on Sunflower Close when a family dog suddenly turned aggressive, leading to a violent attack on two adult residents.

Merseyside Police officers arrived at the scene following an emergency call and found a chaotic situation unfolding. Three children were in the home at the time of the attack, but officers swiftly secured them in a separate room to prevent injury.

Injuries Sustained

Emergency medical teams confirmed that the male victim sustained:

  • Deep lacerations to his right ankle
  • Multiple puncture wounds to his forearms and hands
  • A fractured right hand

The female victim suffered:

  • A puncture wound to her right cheek
  • Severe cuts and bruising to her forearms

Both victims were rushed to hospital for urgent medical treatment.

How the Attack Began

Chief Inspector Dave Atkinson of Merseyside Police provided further details about the tragic incident.

“The attack began during what should have been a harmless game of hide and seek among the children. The dog suddenly started growling at them, displaying aggressive behaviour,” he explained.

“When the male occupant attempted to intervene, the situation escalated rapidly into a full-blown attack.”

Police Response and Dog Seizure

Officers at the scene acted quickly, restraining the aggressive dog while ensuring the children remained safe.

The dog has since been surrendered by its owners and is scheduled to be humanely euthanised. Investigators are currently working to confirm the exact breed of the dog.

Concerns Over Rising Dog Attacks

The incident has sparked renewed concerns over the safety of family pets and responsible pet ownership.

  • Experts from the British Veterinary Association warn that recognising early signs of aggression is crucial to preventing tragic incidents like this.
  • Statistics from Dogs Trust UK indicate a rise in domestic dog attacks over the past year, with children and family members often at risk.
