Firefighters are currently tackling a large blaze at the former Wade Ceramics factory on Westport Road, Burslem.
Six fire engines have been deployed to the scene as crews work to bring the fire under control. Thick smoke has been seen billowing from the building, with witnesses describing the smoke as “absolutely horrific” and noting a strong smell similar to burning rubber.
A spokesperson for Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We currently have six crews in attendance at a large fire on Westport Road, in Burslem. Please avoid this area while we deal with this incident.
The fire broke out earlier this evening (Saturday, 27 April), leading to significant disruption in the area. Residents and motorists have been urged to stay away from Westport Road to allow emergency services to operate safely.
One local described the scene, saying: “You literally could not see anything up or down the street — no houses and no people.
StokeonTrentLive has approached Staffordshire Police for further comment regarding the incident. It is currently unknown whether there have been any injuries.
