Chertsey Burglar Jailed for three years for burglary and fraud charges
A Chertsey man is behind bars for the next three years after pleading guilty to a number of burglary and fraud charges when he appeared at Guildford Crown Court yesterday (14 May). Darren Turner, 35 of Barker Road, Chertsey, pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary and three fraud charges. Turner broke into a home on Coombe Drive, Addlestone, where a lone woman was sleeping, during the night of 4 July 2017 and stole a handbag containing a phone, cash, glasses and a photo of the victim’s late husband. He attempted to use the victim’s card but was declined after he tried to use an invalid PIN number. He was captured on CCTV trying to use the card at a cash machine. Mobile data obtained from his phone also proved that he was in the area at the time, resulting in his arrest and charge. Turner was jailed for two years and eight months for the burglary, and five months’ imprisonment for each count of fraud, to be served concurrently. He had earlier admitted to a previous burglary at a Chertsey school on 8 October 2018 which resulted in a four month sentence, to be served consecutively, meaning he will spend a total of three years in prison. Investigating officer PC Elaine Garvanovic said: “This has been a long and complex investigation but Turner is finally behind bars where he belongs. “I hope the local community will feel reassured by the actions taken by officers. “This sentence proves that Surrey Police" id="85170">Surrey Police will continue to gather evidence on burglars, arrest them and put them before the courts.”
