Heathrow Security Staff Set for Eight-Day Strike Amid Summer Chaos
Just as the busy summer season kicks off, 1,400 Heathrow security officers are hitting the picket lines for an eight-day strike. Unite union has announced walkouts on May 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, and again on May 25, 26, and 27, threatening major travel disruption.
These fresh strikes follow a hefty 10-day walkout over Easter that grounded hundreds of flights, leaving travellers stranded and chaos at the gates.
Union Slams CEO’s Eye-Watering Pay Rise
Unite’s national secretary, Sharon Graham, condemned Heathrow’s chief executive John Holland-Kaye for pocketing an 88% pay hike — soaring from £800,000 to £1.5 million — while refusing fair wage hikes for security staff. She said:
“Yet again, we have a chief executive who thinks it is acceptable to increase his earnings by an eye-watering 88%, from £800,000 to a staggering £1.5 million, while denying his own workers a decent pay rise.”
“With more workers being balloted and disruption expected throughout the summer, this dispute is bound to escalate.”
Staff Pay Squeezed as Costs Soar
Heathrow security officers currently earn around £30,000. New recruits start at £26,000 plus a £4,000 shift allowance. Yet Unite claims wages have plunged 24% in real terms since 2017, thanks to pay rises that fail to keep pace with inflation.
Low pay is driving a mass exodus, with a union survey revealing over a third of security staff plan to quit. Wayne King, Unite’s regional coordinator, warned:
“Strikes next month will cause additional disruption to airport passengers, but this dispute is a direct result of Heathrow’s stubborn refusal to make an offer that meets our members’ expectations.”
“Our members want a significant permanent pay increase. A little one-time lump sum won’t ease their ongoing financial struggles.”
“While the CEO lives the life of a millionaire, our members struggle to pay their bills and put food on the table. This is about need, not greed.”
