Dramatic Rescue Off Shoreham as Rowing Boat Capsizes
Chaos hit Shoreham this morning when a two-person scull capsized, leaving both rowers stranded in the water and drifting out of the harbour with the tide. Local coastwatchers from the National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) spotted the emergency and sprang into action.
Coastguard Called as Rowing Boats Unable to Help
With the other rowing boats powerless to assist, the NCI wasted no time alerting the Coastguard. The alarm quickly reached Shoreham RNLI Lifeboat Station and HM Coastguard Shoreham, who scrambled to the scene.
Swift Lifeboat Rescue Brings Rowers to Safety
The lifeboat arrived just as the pair were drifting well beyond the harbour limits. The two people in the water were scooped aboard the inshore lifeboat and rushed back to the RNLI station to warm up. Meanwhile, a coxed four from the rowing club towed the overturned scull back to Kingston beach.
