PM Meets Aussie Leader Ahead of AUKUS Summit

AUKUS: A Defence Game-Changer

Both leaders hailed the AUKUS partnership as a groundbreaking move to safeguard their nations and boost defence industries for generations. “This is more than military muscle – it’s about investing in our strongest relationships,” they agreed.

The UK-Australia bond is booming. The pair discussed tighter defence cooperation amid shared worries about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Indo-Pacific security. The Prime Minister also previewed the UK’s updated national security and foreign policy strategy, set for release on Monday.

Backing Ukraine & NATO Expansion

Fresh from talks with President Zelenskyy in Kyiv and London, the PM stressed the need for unwavering international support for Ukraine. Both leaders backed the Ukraine training mission led by UK and Australian troops.

They also agreed on the critical importance of Sweden and Finland joining NATO – a move that will reshape European security.

Trade, Sport & Stronger Ties

Big opportunities lie ahead in trade, investment, and culture. The UK prepares to ratify the UK-Australia trade deal this year and push for entry into the CPTPP trade bloc.

On a lighter note, the leaders cheered their nations’ friendly sporting rivalry. The Prime Minister said he’s looking forward to seeing England’s Lionesses roar at the Women’s World Cup, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand later this year.
