The Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is appealing for information after a disturbing incident of animal abuse was caught on CCTV outside a shop on Montrose Street. The incident, which took place on 10 October, was witnessed by a concerned member of the public.
The chief inspector of the Scottish SPCA, Laura McIntyre, expressed her concern and stated, “We are keen to trace the gentleman captured in the CCTV and make sure the dog is okay.”
According to witnesses, the man involved is described as tall and lean, in his early to mid-twenties, with blonde hair. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a navy hoodie. Preliminary investigations suggest that he is a local resident.
The dog seen in the footage is a black and white collie, appearing to be relatively young. The disturbing incident occurred when the man tied the collie up outside the shop and entered. Shortly after, he rushed out and struck the dog three times, causing it to cower and fall on its side.
When confronted by a passer-by, the man offered the excuse that the dog was chewing on its lead, justifying his actions. Upon returning to the shop and untieing the collie, the dog continued to display signs of fear and distress.
Chief Inspector McIntyre emphasised, “No animal should be subjected to physical violence, and this is not the correct way to train any animal displaying unwanted behavior.”
The Scottish SPCA is now urging anyone who may recognise the man in question to come forward with information. They can contact the organisation’s animal helpline at 03000 999 999. All calls will be treated confidentially.
