Brighton Lifeboat Crew Finds Dolphin Companions

In what was expected to be a routine training session, Brighton RNLI volunteers were treated to a remarkable experience when a playful pod of dolphins joined them on their way back to Brighton Marina.

The crew had spent their Saturday morning conducting vital rescue training drills with the Saltdean Swim & Surf Club, perfecting essential lifesaving techniques in open water. As they made their return journey, just off the coast, the crew was astonished to spot two dolphins swimming alongside their lifeboat.

Tom Hedges, a volunteer crew member who captured the moment on his head camera, shared the excitement: “On our way back to Brighton Marina, we were met by two playful dolphins who put on quite a show, swimming alongside us and leaping impressively. It was an incredible privilege and truly a highlight for the entire crew.”

Reflecting on the day’s training, Tom continued: “We visited the Saltdean Swim & Surf Club, where we trained local children aged 7-16 in sea safety and lifesaving skills. After demonstrating how to assess an injured casualty and evacuate them to our lifeboat, we held a floating Q&A session in calm conditions. A big thank you to the club volunteers and the young people for their participation.”

The Brighton RNLI continues its dedicated efforts to provide lifesaving services along the coast while promoting water safety awareness in the community.
