Bus Crashes Into Bridge in South Norwood — Roof Ripped Off, Emergency Response Underway


Emergency services have rushed to the scene of a major collision in South Norwood this evening (Wednesday, 5 June), after a bus struck a railway bridge, ripping off the vehicle’s roof and raising concerns about potential trapped passengers.

  • LFB deployed multiple fire appliances, including crews with rescue equipment, amid reports of possible entrapment.

  • LAS, including a Hazardous Area Response Team, is treating casualties at the scene.

  • Police have cordoned off the area and are diverting traffic.

Eyewitness Accounts and Local Impact

Images from the scene show the roof of the bus completely sheared off beneath the bridge. Debris is scattered across the road, and emergency services are working under floodlights.

Local bus services are on diversion and rail services may also be disrupted due to the proximity of the crash site to the tracks.

Police Statement and Witness Appeal

A Met Police spokesperson said:

“Emergency services are on scene at a serious road traffic collision on Portland Road, SE25, where a bus has collided with a low bridge.
Inquiries are ongoing to determine if any persons remain trapped.”
