Cowes week sailor rushed to hospital after falling overboard

A major rescue operation is taking place at Trinity landing point in Cowes on the Isle of Wight this afternoon after a sailor fell overboard from the racing vessel Arcadian and was picked up by racingboat RS Elite class called Riff Raff in the Solent whilst racing. The sailor a man in 40’s fell whilst the vessel was gybing during a race near to Osbourne bay. Lifeboat crew are understood to have carried out CPR on the man. The rescue helicopter 175 from Lee on the Solent and the Hampshire Air ambulance have also been called to the scene just after 10.30am on Friday afternoon. Two ambulances and an officer were also sent to the scene. The rescue helicopter paramedic was winched aboard the Cowes lifeboat who had been sent out by the UK coastguard after a Mayday message was sent advising of the man overboard. The wife of the man ha been rushed to St Mary’s hospital by one of the organisers from Lendy Cowes week. A spokesperson for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: “HM Coastguard is currently coordinating a response following a MAYDAY reporting a person in the water north of Osborne Bay shortly after 10.30am this morning. “Cowes RNLI lifeboat has been sent along with Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team and the HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter from Lee-on-Solent is also on scene. “The person was pulled out of the water by a passing vessel and escorted by the lifeboat to shore. The casualty has been passed into the care of the Isle of Wight ambulance service. “We have no further information at this time”.
