A routine traffic stop in Trowbridge led to an unexpected encounter between Police and a self-proclaimed motor racing technician who failed to notice an illegal tyre on his BMW 118ES. The incident, which occurred recently, highlights the importance of adhering to road safety regulations and the interactions between motorists and police officers.
Members of the Wiltshire Specialist Operations Unit, specifically the Road Policing Unit (RPU), were conducting their regular duties when they spotted a BMW 118ES in Trowbridge. Upon closer inspection, the officers noticed that the vehicle had an illegal tyre fitted to the rear.

Despite the clear violation, what followed was an unusual exchange between the driver and the police. The driver, who described himself as a motor racing technician, appeared to be unaware of the problematic tyre on his vehicle. He then took an unconventional approach by suggesting that he was “doing better in life than we are,” seemingly about the police officers.
Rather than engaging in a lengthy discussion, the RPU officers proceeded to issue the necessary paperwork to address the issue. It was an opportunity to remind the driver of the importance of road safety and the significance of adhering to regulations regarding the condition of vehicle tyres.
While addressing the situation, the officers also issued an apology for the sound of the M340i. The specific reference to “Goodyear needed” suggests that the vehicle required a new tyre to ensure it met safety standards and could be safely driven on the roads.
This encounter serves as a reminder that law enforcement officers diligently carry out their duties to maintain road safety. Motorists are encouraged to regularly check the condition of their vehicles, including tyres, to ensure they comply with legal requirements and contribute to safer roads for all.
The incident, despite its unusual nature, underscores the importance of cooperation between drivers and law enforcement to promote responsible and safe driving practices on the streets of Trowbridge and beyond.
