Following the closure of the A14 in Ipswich yesterday, police have arrested a teenager in connection with the incident.
Officers responded to reports of concern for the welfare of a female near Nacton around 11:40 am. Upon arrival, a multitude of emergency services resources, including police, negotiators, ambulance personnel, fire crews, and National Highways officers, were deployed to the area.
The situation was resolved safely by approximately 4:25 pm, and the A14 reopened in both directions by 4:45 pm.
Subsequently, a female teenager was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing a public nuisance in connection with the incident. She was taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre for questioning and has been released under investigation pending further inquiries.
During the road closure, a separate incident occurred where officers were approached by a man exhibiting abusive behaviour towards police and negotiators.
The man, identified as 59-year-old Mark Wymer of Hurricane Place in Ipswich, was arrested at the scene. He has been charged with obstructing a police officer in the execution of their duty and possessing a bladed article in public, specifically a lock knife.
Wymer has been released on police bail and is scheduled to appear at Ipswich Magistrates’ Court on March 18, 2024.
Police emphasized that the decision to close the A14, whether by police or partners, is not taken lightly. Considerations include the impact of closure on the town, any risks posed to the public and wider community, and actions are taken to minimize these impacts where possible.
