The London Fire Brigade (LFB) and the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) are urging the public to practice firework safety following a fire at a secondary school on South Street in Enfield. The blaze, believed to have been caused by a group of young people misusing fireworks, damaged part of the external fascia on the first and second floors of the building.
Highlighting the dangers associated with fireworks, the spokesperson added, “This incident demonstrates how quickly situations can escalate from the misuse of fireworks. We will have additional officers on patrol around Halloween and Bonfire Night, addressing any misuse or underage possession of fireworks.”

The police have launched an appeal for information and encourage anyone with details that could assist their investigation to contact them on 101, quoting CAD 5812/23OCT24, or to call Crimestoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000. Assistant Commissioner for Prevention and Protection, Craig Carter of the LFB, reiterated the importance of firework safety, advising, “It’s safer to attend professional displays rather than using fireworks at home. It’s cheaper and more convenient, with plenty of displays across the capital over the coming weeks. You can use our online fireworks display map to find a safe, organized display near you.”

He also emphasized precautions for those choosing to use fireworks at home: “Fireworks are explosives. Only buy them from reputable, licensed sellers with a CE safety mark. Secure them properly in the ground, and keep them away from buildings, trees, animals, and people. Always follow the Fireworks Code, and never set off fireworks if you’ve consumed alcohol.”
The LFB used a 32-metre turntable ladder to support firefighting efforts at the scene. The fire was declared under control just before 7 pm, with the MPS providing additional patrols to ensure community safety.
Residents are reminded of the importance of firework safety as the peak season approaches, with authorities warning that failure to comply with safety measures and regulations could lead to serious incidents.
