In a significant legal outcome at Hull Crown Court, 32-year-old Ryan Stephenson of Johnson Court, Hedon, has been sentenced to two years in prison for stalking and criminal damage. The court also imposed a five-year restraining order against Stephenson, reflecting the severity of his actions and the need to protect the victim from further harassment.
The incident, which took place on Tuesday, 26 December 2023, saw Stephenson engage in a terrifying attempt to intimidate the victim by showing up at her residence armed with a knife. During this episode, he inflicted damage on the property and escalated the situation by throwing a can through a window, resulting in its shattering. The prompt response of law enforcement led to Stephenson’s arrest at the scene after he tried to dispose of the weapon in a nearby drain.
Despite being released on bail under strict conditions not to contact the victim or approach her home, Stephenson flouted these directives. He continued to distress the woman and her family with intrusive messages and even left a handwritten note at her property, leading to his re-arrest on Saturday, 30 December. Stephenson later confessed to breaching his bail conditions during police questioning.
Detective Constable Ian Spain, who led the investigation, commended the victim for her courage and patience throughout the legal process. “Stephenson’s actions not only impacted a woman but also her loved ones, leaving them feeling scared. Nobody should be made to feel unsafe in their own home,” he remarked, highlighting the broader implications of such invasive behaviour.
The case underscores the commitment of the police, partnering agencies, and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to supporting victims of domestic abuse, which can manifest in various forms, including stalking, harassment, and coercive control. Authorities continue to emphasize that such behaviours will not be tolerated and urge victims to come forward.
Victims of stalking or harassment are encouraged to report incidents to the police, Crimestoppers, or seek assistance through The National Stalking Helpline.
