Hurricane Milton Batters Florida, Headed for Atlantic Coast

Hurricane Milton, a powerful Category 2 storm, is currently plowing through central Florida, bringing destructive winds and heavy rainfall to a wide swath of the state. As of 11 PM EDT, the National Hurricane Center reported that Milton’s center was located inland near Venice, moving east-northeast at approximately 16 mph.

The hurricane, packing maximum sustained winds of 105 mph with even higher gusts, is expected to maintain its intensity as it crosses the Florida peninsula overnight. Meteorologists predict Milton will emerge off Florida’s east coast on Thursday, potentially impacting coastal areas from Jacksonville to Miami.

Wind reports from across the state highlight the storm’s intensity:

Venice: Sustained winds of 92 mph with gusts up to 107 mph

– Tampa International Airport: Sustained winds of 58 mph, gusting to 82 mph

– Bartow: Wind gusts reaching 94 mph

Winter Haven: Sustained winds of 52 mph with gusts up to 77 mph

The hurricane’s wind field is expansive, with hurricane-force winds extending 35 miles from the centre and tropical-storm-force winds reaching out to 255 miles. This wide reach means a large portion of Florida’s population is experiencing dangerous conditions.

As Milton traverses Florida, residents are urged to remain indoors and follow local officials’ guidance. The storm is expected to bring storm surge, flooding rains, and the potential for tornadoes across much of the state.

Once Milton moves into the Atlantic, forecasters anticipate it will gradually lose its tropical characteristics and slowly weaken. However, coastal communities along the southeastern United States should remain vigilant as the storm progresses.

Emergency management officials stress the importance of having disaster plans in place and heeding all evacuation orders. The full impact of Hurricane Milton is still unfolding, and recovery efforts are expected to be substantial in the storm’s wake.
