A man remains in hospital following a dramatic 15-hour standoff with armed police in Lewisham High Street.
The incident began at 10:45 AM on February 10, when a man was seen waving a knife and shouting from a third-floor window. Police quickly locked down the area, closing roads near HSBC bank, Lee High Road, Belmont Hill, and A2211 Rennell Street.
After prolonged negotiations, specialist officers gained entry to the property at 2:35 AM on February 11 and detained the suspect, who was found alone inside.
Arrest and Ongoing Investigation
The man was arrested on suspicion of affray and threats to kill before being taken to hospital for assessment. As of today (February 12), he remains in medical care and has not been charged.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson confirmed that all road closures have now been lifted and thanked residents for their patience.
Police Statement
Detective Chief Superintendent Trevor Lawry, head of policing in the South East Area, clarified the situation:
“To clarify, this situation did not involve any hostages, and our specially-trained officers engaged with a man who was believed to be suffering a mental health crisis.”

The Metropolitan Police is continuing its investigation, and it remains unclear whether formal charges will be brought against the suspect.
