Panic broke out at Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) after a man stormed into Terminal 1 armed with a hammer, smashing check-in desk screens and setting a rubbish bin on fire.
The incident unfolded at around 10.30am in the departure area, sending passengers fleeing as black smoke filled parts of the terminal. Video footage shared on social media showed travellers screaming and rushing to evacuate as the man attacked airport fixtures.

Attack and arrest
Witnesses said the suspect set fire to a trash bin before repeatedly striking the glass screens between desks 12 and 13. He allegedly attempted to lash out at security personnel but was restrained by staff members and passengers before being pinned to the ground.

“Due to the closure of some areas and evacuation of premises, possible delays and cancellations for departures from the airport,” the airport said in a statement on X.

No passenger injuries reported
Italian outlet La Stampa reported the suspect appeared to direct his anger primarily at airport property, and not directly at staff or passengers. No serious injuries were reported, though several employees required medical checks.
The terminal remains partially closed while crews clear smoke and assess fire damage.
