Stephen Finnigan, a 63-year-old resident of Longfield Road in Litherland, has been sentenced to 29 years and six months in prison for 29 counts of historical sexual offences against five children. The sentencing took place today, Friday, January 5, at Liverpool Crown Court following a two-week trial.
The investigation into Finnigan’s crimes began in 2014 when a report was received regarding sex offences against a child that occurred over a span of several years. As the investigation progressed, additional victims came forward, resulting in a charge being brought in 2022.
These heinous crimes took place in the last century and involved Finnigan breaching a position of trust as an instructor in the army cadets. Merseyside Police would like to emphasize that the army cadets have fully cooperated throughout the investigation, providing invaluable assistance.
Detective Constable Claire McDonald, who worked on the case, expressed her shock and disgust at Finnigan’s predatory behaviour, stating, “His victims have shown immense courage and bravery to report the deplorable offences that Finnigan committed.” She acknowledged the impact these crimes have on the victims, adding, “I hope this sentence provides some comfort in knowing they did the right thing by reporting Finnigan’s heinous crime to us.”
DC McDonald also emphasised that time is not a barrier to reporting offences and encouraged anyone who has experienced any form of sexual abuse or knows of a child being abused, to come forward and report it to the police. Merseyside Police is dedicated to protecting children from sexual abuse and ensuring the safety of all individuals, regardless of when the offences occurred. Specially trained officers are available to provide support, sensitivity, and compassion to those who come forward.
The army cadets released a statement expressing their full cooperation with the police throughout the investigation. They highlighted the safeguarding measures and procedures in place to protect and support all cadets and adult volunteers, including security screening, rigorous disclosure checks, and regular safeguarding training.
