RMT Rail Strikes Hit UK: Massive Disruption on July 27

Train chaos is back on Wednesday, July 27, as RMT members at Network Rail and UK train operators launch fresh strike action. Expect heavy delays, extreme crowding, and severe service cuts—especially on routes south of London.

Limited Trains, Early Shutdowns, and No Service on Key Lines

  • Many lines south of London and between Cambridge and King’s Lynn face complete shutdown.
  • Train services will start late, around 7:30 a.m., and finish early, some as soon as 4:30 p.m.
  • Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) will run a pared-down schedule similar to the June strikes, with packed trains and delays expected.
  • The Gatwick Express is cancelled, but limited Southern and Thameslink trains will serve Gatwick Airport.

Passengers are urged to check first and last train times for their stations and only travel if absolutely necessary.

Thursday Morning Chaos Continues

On July 28, trains won’t start running until around 7:15 a.m., and services will remain limited. Morning journeys are predicted to be brutally overcrowded. Plan ahead, travel later if you can, and double-check updates before you set off.

Official Warnings and Apologies from Rail Chiefs

Govia Thameslink Railway COO Angie Doll said: “We must again ask people to travel only if absolutely necessary on July 27th due to RMT strike action. Few trains will run and some routes will be closed. Expect later starts, early finishes, overcrowding, and delays. Please plan and consider changing your travel times.”

She added: “We are deeply disappointed that passengers fear ongoing rail disruption. We urge the RMT to work with us for a swift resolution.”

Network Rail CEO Andrew Haines chimed in:

“I apologise for the inconvenience this pointless strike will cause, especially for those travelling to events like the UEFA Women’s Euro semis and the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony. We regret asking passengers to change plans and travel only when necessary.”

Upcoming Disruptions and How to Stay Informed

  • Strike action by ASLEF drivers at nearby train operators will hit GTR services on Saturday, July 30.
  • Updates will be posted on National Rail and online journey planners over the weekend.
  • GTR has already informed hospitals and local stakeholders about the impact.

Prepare for chaos on Britain’s rails—travel only if you must on July 27 and 28, and stay glued to updates to avoid missing your train.
