The RAC has announced the nationwide expansion of its flagship RAC Academy apprenticeship scheme, enabling aspiring mechanics across England to train as RAC patrols or RAC Mobile Mechanics. This milestone is being delivered in partnership with Humberside Motor Trades Group Training Association (Motor Trades GTA) College, marking the first time the scheme will be available in northern England.
This industry-first national rollout is designed to address the ongoing automotive skills shortage by providing Level 2 Vehicle Maintenance and Repair apprenticeships that blend real roadside experience with classroom instruction.
Real-World Training Meets Classroom Excellence
The 30-month course includes:
-
Three weeks a month working alongside a qualified RAC patrol on the road
-
One week a month in-class learning at Motor Trades GTA in Hull
Participants will be mentored and guided by RAC professionals throughout the programme and, upon completion, can step into roles as either RAC roadside patrols or RAC Mobile Mechanics who repair vehicles at customers’ homes or workplaces.
Tony Cullum, RAC Academy Manager, said:
“Through our new partnership with Motor Trades GTA College, we can now offer budding mechanics all over England the keys to an RAC career. Whether working roadside or at home addresses, our apprentices will be supported every step of the way.”
The expansion builds on the success of existing college partnerships in Bristol and London, and marks the start of RAC’s national apprenticeship network. Since 2015, the RAC Academy has already helped over 150 apprentices start careers in the motor industry.
Plugging the UK’s Automotive Skills Gap
The move aims to bolster the UK’s automotive workforce by investing in structured training, real-world skills, and mentorship—a strategy applauded by education and industry leaders.
Rachael Owen, Business and Marketing Lead at Motor Trades GTA, said:
“We are thrilled to join forces with the prestigious RAC Academy. This partnership offers a real opportunity for young people across northern England to launch a rewarding motor industry career.”
Nationwide Applications Now Open
Young people interested in joining the RAC Academy can now apply via Motor Trades GTA and begin training for one of the UK’s most trusted breakdown and mobile mechanic services.
