Eastern Road in Portsmouth has once again been shut down as engineers rush to address a burst sewer, causing disruptions to traffic flow.
The closure affects the southbound route of the A2030, with one lane on the northbound side also blocked. Leaking water has been reported at the same section of road where Southern Water previously conducted repairs, according to Portsmouth City Council.
The council reported this morning that Eastern Road southbound and one lane on the northbound side are closed between Anchorage Road and the roundabout. This closure comes after a burst in Southern Water’s sewer main, located south of the section previously repaired by the utility company. The flooding resulting from the burst sewer poses safety concerns for drivers.
Southern Water tankers are currently on-site working to clear the flooding so that the extent of the damage can be assessed. Despite the road closure, footpaths and cycle paths remain open for pedestrians and cyclists.
The utility company had undertaken a major repair scheme in March in an effort to prevent further sewage pipe bursts. However, despite these efforts, the recent burst has once again disrupted traffic and caused inconvenience for motorists.
Drivers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and allow extra time due to the ongoing closure of Eastern Road.
