A serious multi-vehicle crash and earlier vehicle fire have caused major disruption on the M2 coastbound (eastbound) this evening, with the motorway closed from Junction 1 (A2 Strood) through to Junction 3 (Chatham/Rochester).
The incident, which occurred earlier today, has now resulted in the closure being extended all the way back to the M25, with trapped traffic being slowly released past the scene under police and Highways guidance. Emergency services including fire, police, and ambulance crews remain at the scene, responding to what has been described as a serious accident involving multiple vehicles.
Highways England has confirmed the presence of significant congestion, with queuing traffic stretching back for miles, and motorists reporting delays of over two hours in some areas. The crash followed an earlier vehicle fire, which had already reduced lanes and added to the disruption.
A spokesperson for Kent Police said:
“We are responding to a serious collision on the M2 involving several vehicles. Road closures are in place for safety and to allow emergency services full access. We advise drivers to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.”
Traffic cameras and witnesses have reported stationary traffic and slow-moving vehicles across the eastbound carriageway. There are also knock-on delays reported on surrounding routes, including the A2 and Medway towns.
Drivers are urged to:
- Avoid the M2 eastbound between the M25 and Junction 3
- Follow diversion signs and plan extra time for journeys
- Check local traffic updates before travelling
The cause of the incident and the number of casualties, if any, have not yet been confirmed. Investigations are ongoing, and recovery operations are expected to last into the night.
