Three people have been arrested on suspicion of arson following a devastating fire that tore through the Dunelm store at St James Retail Park in Northampton, sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky and forcing evacuations at neighbouring stores, including Pets at Home.
What Happened?
Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 3:00 PM on Saturday, with dramatic footage shared on social media showing flames and smoke erupting from the roof of the Dunelm store.
The blaze quickly spread to adjoining premises, with firefighters working through the night to contain it. Pets at Home staff and animals were safely evacuated, police confirmed.
Arrests and Investigation
Detective Chief Inspector Andrew Tuff of Northamptonshire Police confirmed that:
“We believe this fire was started deliberately. Through fast-paced enquiries, three individuals have now been arrested on suspicion of arson.”
DCI Tuff added that detectives are particularly keen to speak to a man who may have witnessed suspects setting a fire in the Dunelm toilets shortly before the main fire was reported.

At its height, 11 fire appliances, two aerial ladder platforms, and crews from Buckinghamshire and Lincolnshire joined the operation.

Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the blaze was brought under control by 10:20 AM Sunday, though small pockets of fire remain and damping down operations continue.
Station Commander Rich Walding described the incident as “very protracted” and involving a large-scale response.
“We expect to remain on site throughout the day. The area remains closed and people should avoid the retail park for now,” he said.
Travel Disruption
Towcester Road remains closed in both directions between the St Peter’s Way roundabout and the Shell Garage roundabout. The closure is expected to remain in place until at least 5:00 AM on Monday, according to Northamptonshire Police.

Police are urging the public to come forward with any relevant information. If you were near Dunelm at St James Retail Park around 3:00 PM on Saturday and saw suspicious activity, you are urged to contact Northamptonshire Police via 101, quoting the incident number.
Retail Park Closure
All shops at St James Retail Park are currently closed until further notice. The extent of the damage to the structure and stock is still being assessed.
