Twelve Fire Engines And Around 80 Firefighters Tackled A Grass Fire Near Ockendon Road In Upminster

A grass fire near Ockendon Road in Upminster was tackled by 12 fire engines and approximately 80 firefighters.

Four hectares of grassland were on fire. Firefighters are expected to stay on the scene all night.

The Brigade’s 999 Control Officers responded to more than ten calls about the fire.

The warmer weather we’ve been having makes the ground extremely dry, which unfortunately means grassland, parks, undergrowth, and woodlands will burn quickly when exposed to even the smallest of sparks,” a London Fire Brigade spokesperson said.

We don’t want people to be complacent, which means not barbecuing in parks and open spaces, properly disposing of cigarettes, and clearing away rubbish and glass, which can magnify the sun and cause a fire.

The Brigade was called in at 7.38pm, and the fire was out by 10.50pm. Plumstead, Dagenham, Ilford, Wennington, and other nearby fire stations sent crews to the scene.

The fire’s origin is being investigated.

Top grass fire prevention tips from the Brigade: Don’t grill in parks, public spaces, or on balconies.
Clear away any bottles, glasses, or broken glass to prevent them from magnifying the sun and starting a fire.
Smoking materials, such as cigarettes, should be disposed of safely; do not drop cigarettes on dry ground or out of car windows, as they may land on dry grass and start a fire.
