Police Legend Kelvin Shipp Honoured for 40 Years of Service

Kelvin Shipp has dedicated over four decades to policing, starting as a Special Constable in 1981 before becoming a full-time officer in 1991. The 62-year-old Southsea native served across numerous roles, culminating as a Response and Patrol Team Inspector in Portsmouth until his retirement in March 2022.

Bravery Abroad and Impact at Home

  • Kelvin lent his expertise to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the United Nations, deployed in conflict zones like Iraq and South Sudan.
  • He earned a Chief Constable’s commendation for bravery after stepping in to protect a UN colleague from a hostile mob in South Sudan.
  • He travelled Europe extensively via EU Police Services Training programs, bringing valuable insights back to Hampshire police.
  • In 2019, he helped with the high-profile D-Day 75 anniversary event attended by the Queen and global leaders, including the US President.

Mentor, Leader, and Inspiring Force

Shipp built a reputation as an inspiring mentor, guiding younger officers and passing on his vast policing knowledge. Even after retirement, he continues supporting the National Association of Retired Police Officers, championing the preservation of police history and commemorating fallen colleagues.

“I had absolutely no idea I was being nominated for this honour, so to find out after retirement was very humbling. It’s a tremendous honour,” said Kelvin. “I’ve been so lucky to see many places, but Portsmouth is my spiritual policing home. I really do miss it.”

“I was privileged to have an amazing career. I’d say to anyone considering a career in policing to give it a go. I’ve met incredible people and had fascinating experiences. If I had the chance, I’d do it all again.”

Chief Constable Praises Kelvin’s Legendary Service

“Kelvin devoted his working life to policing and served the public with distinction,” said Chief Constable Olivia Pinkney. “His dedication and commitment across Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, and abroad earned him a reputation as a trusted and highly respected officer with extraordinary drive and enthusiasm.”

“Throughout his frontline career, Kelvin showed outstanding leadership, determination, and courage. We are delighted he has been recognised for 40 years of exemplary service.”
