Canterbury’s cops are clamping down hard on retail crime, with more than 20 charges slapped on suspected shoplifters in the past week.
Multiple Arrests Rock Retailers Across Canterbury
Between Friday, 6 March and Monday, 9 March 2026, police swooped on several suspects linked to a string of shoplifting sprees. The haul of alleged offences covers a range of stores, hitting supermarkets and high street chains alike.
Shoplifting Spree Includes Pet Food, Alcohol and Fragrances
- Collette Oliver, 41, of New Town Street, was charged with four thefts in one day on 20 February. Items stolen include pet food, cleaning products, groceries, and ice cream from Pets at Home, B&M, Subway, and Sainsbury’s on Sturry Road.
- She also faces charges for two New Year incidents at Kingsmead Road supermarket involving stock damage, stolen booze, and assault on staff. Oliver was bailed to Folkestone Magistrates’ Court, returning 15 April.
- Anniemay Rossiter, 31, and Mark Lees, 41, were charged for shoplifting from Sainsbury’s on Old Dover Road and Waitrose at St George’s Place. Both are due at Margate Magistrates’ Court on 13 May.
- David Bates, 39, nicked £450+ worth of cleaning products from B&M. Held since 7 March, he faces five charges and will also appear in court on 13 May.
- Ali Mirzai, 30, stole clothes worth over £300 from Primark and Marks & Spencer. He pled guilty and received an eight-week suspended sentence at Margate Magistrates.
- John Jay Stark, 45, was arrested for stealing beer at Sainsbury’s, allegedly hiding it in the toilets. Meanwhile, Toni Ferry, 37, faces charges including a November 2025 Boots theft of fragrances valued over £300. Both bailed to Folkestone court on 14 May.
