A clumsy drug dealer has been jailed after trying—and spectacularly failing—to outwit undercover cops in Newark.
Spotted in a Suspicious Car
Neighbourhood police officers were running a covert drug operation when they spotted 22-year-old Edmund Mhembere sitting in a car with the engine running. As the team approached, Mhembere refused to get out of the locked vehicle and looked like he was hiding something.
Attempted Escape Foiled
Officers took no chances and pulled him from the car. While they found cannabis on him, they suspected there was more. Before cops could take him into custody, Mhembere tried to make a run across the Mather Road car park—throwing his mobile phone over a wall in a desperate bid to destroy evidence. Cops stopped him within yards and recovered the phone.
Evidence and Fast Justice
Back at the station, officers struck gold. Underneath his clothes, they discovered a stash of 50 wraps of crack cocaine. Analysis of the phone also revealed clear signs of drug dealing.
Working with the Drug Focus Desk, police swiftly charged Mhembere. Within 24 hours of his arrest on 22 January 2026, the Bulwell man pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply Class A drugs and possession of Class B drugs.
He was remanded in custody until sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on 11 March. Mhembere was handed a hefty three-and-a-half-year prison sentence.
