Speeding and Drink Driving Fatal on Tarbock Road
A reckless driver has been slammed with an 11 year and eight-month jail sentence after killing a cyclist in Huyton and fleeing the scene.
James O’Donnell, 35, of Cypress Road, Huyton, pleaded guilty at Liverpool Crown Court on Friday, 20 March to causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop, and drink driving.
The tragedy happened on 5 March 2025. O’Donnell was speeding at 68mph in a 30mph zone on Tarbock Road, heading towards the M62, when he hit 63-year-old cyclist Keith Hornby. Mr Hornby died instantly.
Hit-and-Run and Failed Escape
After the crash, O’Donnell abandoned his black Volkswagen ID5 in a nearby housing estate. Shockingly, he then went to a shop to buy alcohol before walking back home.
Police quickly launched a search and arrested him as he returned on foot. Breathalyser tests revealed O’Donnell’s blood alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit.
Initially denying the charges, he later changed his plea before trial.
Police Condemn Driver’s Dangerous Actions
“James O’Donnell’s choice to drive drunk at grossly excessive speeds shows complete disregard for everyone else on the road,” said Detective Sergeant Andy Roper, lead investigator.
“Keith Hornby was simply enjoying a sunny day on his familiar cycling route. He never expected a drunk driver speeding behind him. After hitting him, O’Donnell callously looked at the victim, then sped off.”
“Mr Hornby was the primary carer for his elderly mother, taking some much-needed fresh air and exercise. His death is heartbreaking and completely avoidable. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”
Community Reaction and Ongoing Investigation
Merseyside Police praised members of the public who stopped to help Mr Hornby and supported the investigation.
The Serious Collision Investigation Unit continues to work to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
