A 61-year-old man charged with murdering a housing association worker in Bridgend was living at the sheltered housing complex where she worked, a court has heard.
Clifford Foster appeared before Newport Magistrates’ Court on Friday 23 October 2026, charged with the murder of 47-year-old Eleanor Barnfield.
Ms Barnfield, a mother who worked for the Valleys to Coast housing association, died in hospital on Monday 19 October after her car collided with a wall on Coity Road in Bridgend.
Police responding to the collision discovered that she had suffered puncture wounds which were unrelated to the crash.
A murder investigation was launched, resulting in Foster being charged.
The court heard that Foster was living at Ger-y-Nant, a sheltered housing complex managed by Valleys to Coast, where Ms Barnfield worked.
Murder Accused Remanded in Custody
Foster appeared at Newport Magistrates’ Court on Friday morning.
During the brief hearing, he spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth.
He was not asked to enter a plea.
The court heard that Foster’s address was Ger-y-Nant in Bridgend, a sheltered housing development providing accommodation for older residents.
The case was sent to Cardiff Crown Court because murder charges must be dealt with in the Crown Court.
Foster was remanded in custody, with his next hearing scheduled for Monday 26 October.
No plea or determination of guilt was made during the magistrates’ court hearing.
Eleanor Found Injured After Car Collided With Wall
South Wales Police were called to Coity Road at approximately 12.43pm on Monday 19 October following reports that a vehicle had crashed into a wall.
When officers arrived, they found the driver had sustained injuries that were not caused by the collision.
Police later described them as puncture wounds.
Ms Barnfield was taken to hospital, but died despite the efforts of medical staff.
Her death prompted a major investigation involving detectives and specialist officers.
Police subsequently carried out a significant operation around Ger-y-Nant, where Foster was later arrested.
The investigation also led to some residents being temporarily displaced during police activity.
Sheltered Housing Complex at Centre of Investigation
Ger-y-Nant is managed by Valleys to Coast, the housing association which employed Ms Barnfield.
The complex consists of sheltered accommodation for older people and operates with non-resident management staff.
At the court hearing, Foster was identified as a resident of the development.
The prosecution concerns the death of Ms Barnfield, but the precise circumstances leading to her fatal injuries have not yet been established in open court.
South Wales Police have stressed that the case is not being investigated as a domestic incident.
Detectives have also asked members of the public to avoid speculation while criminal proceedings remain active.
Family Remembers Loving Mother Who Was Their Rock
Ms Barnfield’s family paid an emotional tribute following her death.
In a statement issued through South Wales Police, they described her as:
“Mum was the kindest, most loving bravest person in the world.”
They said she meant everything to her family and would be deeply missed by those who loved her.
The family added:
“She was our rock.”
Specialist family liaison officers are continuing to support Ms Barnfield’s loved ones.
Her death has also deeply affected colleagues and members of the community where she worked.
Housing Association Pays Tribute to Valued Colleague
Valleys to Coast chief executive Jo Oak said the organisation was devastated by Ms Barnfield’s death.
She described Eleanor as a valued member of staff who had made an important contribution to the housing association and the communities it serves.
The organisation said her loss had been felt by everyone who knew and worked alongside her.
It is providing support to people affected by the tragedy and continues to cooperate with South Wales Police.
The housing association has declined to comment further on the circumstances of the death out of respect for Ms Barnfield’s family and the ongoing criminal investigation.
Ambulance Service Rejects Claims of Delayed Response
The Welsh Ambulance Service has also addressed rumours circulating online about the emergency response.
Some social media posts suggested that Ms Barnfield had been left waiting for an ambulance before the collision.
The service described claims of a delayed response as factually incorrect.
It confirmed receiving an emergency call relating to the road traffic collision at approximately 12.44pm on Monday 19 October.
A Cymru High Acuity Response Unit reached the scene at 12.51pm, seven minutes after the call.
Two additional emergency ambulances arrived at 1.07pm and 1.13pm.
Critical care support was also provided by the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service, whose clinicians attended aboard a Wales Air Ambulance helicopter.
Ms Barnfield was transported to hospital by road.
The ambulance service said preliminary enquiries had not identified any calls from Ms Barnfield’s phone numbers.
Investigations were continuing to establish whether calls had been received through other means.
The service urged the public not to spread speculation about the circumstances.
Detectives Appeal for Information
Detective Inspector Claire Lamerton, the senior investigating officer, said her thoughts remained with Ms Barnfield’s loved ones.
She confirmed that specialist officers were supporting the family and urged the public not to speculate because court proceedings were underway.
Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the investigation team.
