Independent Police Watchdog Receives Mandatory Referral

The fatal collision has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) because it occurred following contact with police.

Avon and Somerset Police also notified its Professional Standards Unit.

The referral is a required procedure following certain deaths involving police contact and does not, by itself, establish wrongdoing by any officer.

The IOPC has acknowledged the referral and is assessing the circumstances to determine whether an independent investigation is required.

In the meantime, enquiries are being overseen by a detective inspector from Avon and Somerset Police’s Major Crime Investigation Team.

Investigators will seek to establish exactly what happened before, during and after the collision.

A37 Wells Road Closed for More Than 12 Hours

The fatal crash resulted in a lengthy closure of the A37 Wells Road while emergency services and specialist collision investigators attended.

Officers examined the scene, gathered evidence and arranged for the recovery of the two vehicles.

The closure affected traffic through the southern part of Bristol throughout Sunday.

Police confirmed that the road reopened shortly after 4pm.

The investigation into the cause of the collision remains ongoing.

Police Appeal for Dashcam Footage and Witnesses

Avon and Somerset Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have recorded either vehicle to come forward.

Officers want to hear from motorists who were travelling in the Wells Road, Airport Road and Wootton Park area shortly before or around 4am on Sunday.

Anyone with dashcam footage, CCTV or other recordings that could assist detectives is urged to preserve the footage and contact police.

Police contact number: 101

Family Supported Following Teenager’s Death

The death has left a family grieving following the collision in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Specialist police officers have informed the boy’s relatives and are providing support.

Investigators have yet to establish the full circumstances of the incident, including the events leading to the police pursuit and the collision between the Nissan and Audi.

The IOPC will determine whether it should investigate the circumstances of police involvement.

UKNIP will provide further updates as police release information about the investigation, the condition of those injured and any developments concerning the teenager arrested.
