Vandals Deface Historic Sawbridgeworth Church

Police are hunting for witnesses after vile graffiti and damage were discovered on Great St Mary’s Church in Sawbridgeworth.

Offenders Target Grade I Listed Gem

Between noon on Tuesday, 7 June and 4:50pm on Thursday, 9 June, troublemakers scrawled offensive messages into fresh lime render on the church’s side wall. They also kicked the render, leaving multiple footprints and ruining the costly repair work.

Community Outraged Over Disrespect

“This behaviour is completely unacceptable and has, understandably, caused a great deal of upset among the local community,” said PCSO Amanda Higham from the Safer Neighbourhood Team.

Great St Mary’s Church isn’t just any building—it’s Sawbridgeworth’s only Grade I listed site and a sacred place of worship, making this act of vandalism even more shocking.

Anyone with information is urged to come forward and help catch the culprits.
