Kent Police officers, in partnership with Kent County Council’s Trading Standards and other agencies, have seized illicit tobacco worth an estimated £2,000 from shops in Margate, as part of a crackdown on organised crime.
Inspector Jim Woodward spoke about the importance of ensuring businesses comply with legal standards: “Businesses have a responsibility to ensure they are trading legally when it comes to the sale of goods such as tobacco and alcohol. Non-compliance can lead to serious issues in local communities, such as increased nuisance behaviour, which can have a significant impact, even if carried out by only a small number of people.”

He also warned about the link between illicit goods and organised crime: “The sale of illegal tobacco often supports criminal groups, and while some may see the lower prices as a bargain, purchasing these goods can ultimately contribute to more serious crime in the area.
The police operation also included checks on the sale of alcohol, ensuring that business owners are adhering to licensing laws. Inspector Woodward assured that the police would continue to monitor and enforce compliance to help reduce antisocial behaviour and crime in the community.
