A judge who spared a 14-year-old boy custody after he stabbed a schoolgirl at least 10 times has defended his decision to pursue rehabilitation, with newly reported court transcripts revealing that he described the attacker as a “bright lad”.

The teenager, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, attacked a 14-year-old girl inside a convenience store in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, on 15 March 2026, after she rejected his romantic advances.

Armed with a six-inch kitchen knife, the boy repeatedly stabbed the girl as she attempted to escape. A shopkeeper who intervened was also injured.

Despite the violence, the teenager received a 12-month referral order and a three-year restraining order when sentenced in September.

The victim’s mother has condemned the punishment, saying her family feel badly let down by the justice system.

Judge Told Teenage Attacker Prison Was ‘Last Place’ for Him

Court transcripts reported by the Daily Mail provide further insight into Judge Ian Lawrie KC’s reasoning during the proceedings.

The judge acknowledged serious concerns about the teenager’s behaviour, including his decision to carry a knife, the apparent planning involved and the level of violence captured on CCTV.

However, he also considered the boy’s age, family circumstances and prospects for rehabilitation.

Judge Lawrie described the teenager as a “bright lad” with a supportive home environment.

He indicated that placing him in custody would be a last resort and expressed a preference for a sentence designed to provide supervision and support.

The judge’s remarks have attracted renewed attention following criticism from the victim’s family.

Girl Stabbed Repeatedly After Rejecting Boy’s Advances

The court heard that the boy had become fixated on the girl after she turned down his advances in December 2025.

He subsequently contacted her through fake social media accounts.

On the morning of 15 March, the teenager waited near a shop in Cirencester before following the girl inside.

He was carrying a kitchen knife concealed in his jeans.

CCTV footage captured the boy approaching the victim, grabbing her and repeatedly attacking her with the weapon.

A shopkeeper attempted to stop the assault but was struck in the back with the knife.

The girl managed to escape from the store and raise the alarm at a nearby property.

She suffered cuts to her neck, hands and face, along with bruising to her back.

Police later located the boy nearby and recovered a knife from his pocket.

Attacker Spent Three Months in Secure Accommodation Before Release

The teenager spent approximately three months at Vinney Green, a secure children’s facility in South Gloucestershire, following the attack.

During a hearing in June, Judge Lawrie expressed dissatisfaction with the boy’s placement in secure accommodation.

He subsequently authorised his release on bail with electronic monitoring and a daily curfew.

The court later heard that the teenager did not return home until the early hours following his release, preventing the electronic tag from being fitted until the next day.

The judge attributed some of the difficulties to the defendant’s young age.

The boy ultimately avoided a custodial sentence.

He had admitted wounding with intent and possession of a bladed article in a public place.

The court also dealt with the injury caused to the shopkeeper.

Victim’s Mother Says Family Feel Failed by Justice System

The victim’s mother has publicly criticised the sentencing decision, arguing that the seriousness of the attack warranted a custodial punishment.

Speaking anonymously to broadcasters, she said the family felt the justice system had failed to provide sufficient protection for her daughter.

She questioned how someone responsible for such a violent attack could receive a community-based sentence.

The mother also described the emotional impact the case has had on her family.

Her concerns were echoed in the victim’s own statement to the court.

The schoolgirl described experiencing nightmares, anxiety and a persistent fear of being attacked again.

She said the experience had affected her confidence, independence and ability to trust others.

The teenager’s injuries were not considered life-threatening, but the psychological consequences of the attack have continued well beyond her physical recovery.

Police Say Cirencester Knife Attack Could Have Been Fatal

Detective Superintendent Ian Fletcher, Gloucestershire Constabulary’s Head of Serious and Complex Investigations, previously described the assault as an exceptionally dangerous attack carried out during daylight hours.

He said the girl had been fortunate to survive without more serious physical injuries.

Police warned that the consequences could have been fatal had the knife struck a different part of her body.

Investigators also highlighted the courage of the shopkeeper who intervened.

Why Was the Teenage Attacker Not Jailed?

The boy was sentenced under youth justice provisions, which place particular emphasis on rehabilitation and consider custody a last resort.

A referral order requires a young offender to work with a youth offender panel and follow an agreed programme aimed at preventing further offending.

The separate three-year restraining order places legal restrictions on the teenager’s conduct towards the victim.

The case has prompted questions about whether the existing youth sentencing framework adequately reflects the seriousness of violent offences and the lasting impact on victims.

The Government has previously acknowledged public concern surrounding the sentence and indicated that it is reviewing protections for victims in youth court cases.

The victim and defendant remain legally protected from identification.
